Rags to Riches – The John Haremza Story
Network marketing has afforded me and my family an incredible life of friends around the world, great homes, travel, and fine dining. But life has not always been easy. As a child with dyslexia, I was perceived as slow, dumb and stupid. I was put in special classes to have tests read to me.
When I was in high school the teachers would call on me to read out loud. I would struggle and stammer and stumble through the passage. To this day I can hear my class mates laughing and taunting me. My teachers were frustrated with me and even my parents were asking “Why can’t John read?” I wanted to know why I could not read. No matter how hard I tried the words all jumbled together. I had no self-esteem, no confidence and I just wanted to be invisible.
After I graduated high school, I got a job as a machine operator at a potato chip company. Eventually I got promoted to my dream job in maintenance and I thought that my on-call 24/7, $22,000 a year job was the best job I would ever have. My family thought so too.
Life before Network Marketing: working for a potato chip company as a maintenance manager & living in a trailer
My introduction to network marketing: A good friend invited me to a meeting at his house. It was something to do about water filters. Because of my mechanical skills I assumed that he wanted me to check out the product or build a display. Certainly not sell. Because of my learning disability I was very, very introverted with no self-esteem and no confidence.
We had a problem on the production line so I was several hours late for the meeting. I walked in late still wearing my work clothes, smelling like potato chips, wearing my safety goggles and yes, even my hair net. I can still see the expression of the faces of the two suits from Minneapolis. “We waited two hours for this guy?”
They demonstrated a filter that turned murky water crystal clear. I was amazed. There were five of us there that night but I was the only one who got excited and wrote a postdated check for $480. I decided then and there that no matter what, I was going to find the $5000 I needed to be a Direct Distributor.
The reception I got at home (a 12 by 72 foot Garland trailer) was not enthusiastic. We were going to be married that month and my fiancé was not happy. Everyone I knew from family to friends to co-workers at the plant, even management assumed I had lost my mind. I still remember sitting in the break room and having co-workers tell me I would fail.
I remember saying “If I try and fail the worst that can happen is I have to come back and get a job like you have”. You could have heard a pin drop.
I got my dad to co-sign a $5000 loan (reluctantly) and jumped in with both feet. Back then I thought that if I could earn $3000 a month and be in business for myself I would not know what to do with all that money. The $3000 became $5,000 and then $10,000 and it continued to grow from there.
Can what happened for me happen for you? Yes! Absolutely! I went from a blue collar worker, in debt, making $9.00 an hour with a high school education (sort of), with a severe learning disability, no business experience, no sales experience, no self-esteem or confidence and certainly no knowledge or understanding of network marketing to having earned over $14,000,000. Yes… for sure… you can do this!
Life after achieving Network Marketing success: an incredible lake home, time to enjoy life and my family, travel around the world, friends around the globe, plus all the toys, especially my Harleys!
Can what happened for me happen for you? Absolutely! People look at me now and assume it was easy but back then I had no sales experience and no business knowledge. I did not even understand recruiting. I started my career going door-to-door in winter, a few days before Christmas, selling water filters. These filters were sold using the “puppy dog approach”. We would leave the filter with someone for a week and they would not want to give it up. (At least that’s how it was supposed to work.) I placed 3 filters my first week. I went back the following week to check on the filter and my older brother came with me for moral support. I sold one of the three I had placed which netted me a $59 profit. I looked at my by brother and said “we are going to be rich”. He wanted in and I told him “ok but we need to make a pact between us that no one else is to know about it”. I thought why would I want to create my own competition by having other people selling it? I did not understand the network marketing concept of recruiting others or the idea of leverage. All I could see back then was the idea of buying a filter for $120, selling it for $179 and putting $59 in my pocket.
I struggled trying to sell filters for several months. Then I attended an event which opened my eyes to the concept of recruiting and leverage. I got it!
After 6 months I was able to quit my maintenance job and go full time. I spent four incredible eye opening years with that company. I earned $400,000 and my life and paradigm changed forever. I learned the fundamentals but most important I learned about timing and consumable products.
I made a move to a younger company with consumable products. I spent the next twelve years there and earned $4,000,000. I had arrived! I was one of the top leaders in the company.
Then I was given the opportunity to be the master distributor with a start-up company. It was incredibly risky but I took a leap of faith, resigned from the company and started over. Call it wisdom, luck or good fortune. Although it was not easy and the first few years were a struggle, I’ve now earned over $9,000,000 with that company. I’m not involved on a day-to-day basis with that company but I still enjoy a mid-six figure residual income.
And today I find myself a part of what will prove to be the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
